The New Virginia United Methodist Church celebrated their 100th Anniversary on Sunday, May 2, 1982.
A large group of visitors and former members, along with the Cowles Methodist people attended the 11;00 worship service conducted by the pastor, Reverend Floyd Richardson. A challenging, inspiring message, “Opportunity Knocks Twice”, was given by the Reverend Richard Turner, District Superintendent of the South Central District.
At no0n, a bountiful dinner was enjoyed, along with the renewing of old friendships. A former teacher of New Virginia School District 65, Mrs. Mildred Lutz Miller, of Holstein, arrived and was able to gather eleven of her former students for a picture in the afternoon.
The afternoon fellowship included signing by Mrs. Richardson, a specially written song, “The Little White Church On The Hill” was sung by Wilma Fletcher, displays of old church records, pictures and clippings, as well as letters from former ministers and church members were of great interest to everyone.
Mrs. Richardson supplied a beautifully, decorated anniversary cake which was served at the close of the afternoon services.
Some old fashioned group singing was enjoyed by many, including Mrs. Art Mallison (Dorothy Brooks), Mrs. Ed Votipka (Margaret Lambrecht) and Mrs. Raymond Frentz (Norva Wilson).
Guests were present from Oklahoma, Florida, Missouri, Texas, Iowa, Minnesota, plus many from Nebraska. All departed thinking it had been a very special day.
